PURSUE TRAINING AS A NURSE'S AIDE

Do you enjoy caring for others? The four (4) week* Nurse’s Aide program offered exclusively in the West Hartford, CT location is designed to provide students with the knowledge and skills needed to perform basic nursing assistant care.

THE PROGRAM

This course is designed to provide students with the knowledge and skills necessary to prepare the student to sit for the Connecticut Nurse’s Aide State Exam.** The course emphasizes the knowledge and skills needed to care for individuals in nursing, long-term care and home care settings, with a humanistic, holistic and restorative approach to direct patient care. The procedures and concepts presented prepare graduates to pursue entry-level nurse’s aide positions and provide students with practical information and techniques based on current practices. American Institute has been approved by the State of Connecticut, Office of Higher Education and the Department of Public Health to offer the Nurse’s Aide Program.

**American Institute does not provide certification for any allied health field. Instead, we offer students preparation to sit for the Connecticut Nurse’s Aide State Exam. Learners must meet eligibility criteria to sit for applicable certification exams. 

WHAT YOU'LL LEARN

Students learn to take and record vital signs, assist patients with daily activity and recovery needs, and prepare to take the Connecticut Nurse’s Aide State Exam. Upon successful completion of this program, students will be able to:

  • Describe the organization of healthcare facilities and the roles of the interdisciplinary healthcare team.
  • Identify the responsibilities of the registered nurse, licensed practical nurse and nursing assistant in a variety of settings.
  • Apply nursing assistant theoretical knowledge in providing basic healthcare services.
  • Perform essential nursing assistant clinical skills.
  • Use accurate and appropriate communication with members of the healthcare team.
  • Employ ethical and moral behaviors, and the characteristics of honesty, responsibility and caring in the provision of patient/resident care.
  • Carry out and follow up on patient/resident care tasks as delegated by the nurse.

Certified nurse’s aides (CNAs) work under the direction of registered nurses, licensed practical nurses or licensed vocational nurses. CNAs work in hospitals and residents of long-term care facilities and nursing homes.

Certified Nurse’s Aide Responsibilities

Also known as nursing aides or nursing assistants, CNAs provide basic care and help with activities of daily living. Depending upon their level of training and the state in which they work, some may dispense medication.

Their responsibilities may include:

  • Cleaning and bathing patients or residents
  • Helping patients use the toilet and dress
  • Listening to and recording patients’ health concerns and reporting information to nurses
  • Measuring patients’ vital signs, such as blood pressure and temperature
  • Serving meals and help patients eat
  • Turning, repositioning, and transferring patients between beds and wheelchairs
