Career in Sonography
Did you know with a career in sonography there is always the opportunity for growth? We are not just talking about moving up within your prospective specialization, but actually exploring a career outside of medicine. With training in diagnostic medical sonography, you don’t have to settle on just one career goal. Do you love teaching, marketing or administrative work? Believe it or not, as a sonographer you can combine your other passions with your already promising career. Here are four paths to take when advancing your career as an ultrasound technician.
Teaching: Did your educational experience inspire you to excel in the field of sonography? Become a teacher where you can motivate others in the diagnostic medical sonography program to achieve their personal and career goals. With a bachelor’s degree* and considerable professional experience, you could instruct others in technical programs, teaching hospitals, and colleges and universities.
Marketing and Sales: As a practiced sonographer, you know ultrasound technology front and back. Make the easy transition from technician to sales, and become an ultrasound equipment sales representative. Within this field you will sell ultrasound technology to other medical professionals. Ultrasound technology can also be marketed and sold for nonmedical uses to plastic, steel or other industries.
Administrator: With enough experience as an ultrasound technician, you can rise to the position of administrator or clinical supervisor within a medical office or hospital. In an administrative role, you will take on managerial responsibilities and duties, overseeing colleagues in your department, setting schedules and choosing medical equipment. Depending on your level of training, you may also serve as a consultant to other sonographers.
Other Areas in Medicine: Do you want to learn about a different area of medical ultrasound? Advance your career in a different specialization, by advancing your education. Within your field you have access to highly trained sonographers with diverse specialties – get direct experience by speaking with or working alongside an accomplished sonographer. In addition, as a sonographer you can become certified in other areas of medicine to advance or change the direction of your career. Pursue a certification in magnetic resonance imaging, nuclear medicine technology or radiation therapy.
Whether you want to explore a career outside of medicine, or you are considering changing your focus within sonography, it all starts with the skills you that give you options. Career training in diagnostic medical sonography allows you to achieve your personal and career goals, while giving you the opportunity to grow as a person and as a professional.
